In: Leo Hayes ..
Out: .. High School
VO:
Leo Hayes High School baseball team practices on Fischer Field. For most, it’s far away from their competition. For one, it’s far away from home. Hiroya Tsunekawa is an exchange student at Leo Hayes, from Gifu, Japan. This season, he is the Lion’s secret weapon.
VO:
Hiroya made the long journey to Canada in August, and immediately asked for the name of the coach.
OC (Kevin Agar):
He came from a school that played baseball a lot, and he wanted to come out and try out, so he called, I took the phone call. And to the surprise of all of us, not that we were surprised that he was going to be a good ball player, but he’s an exceptional baseball player. He’s very, very good.
VO:
Assistant Coach Mark Sibley says that Hiroya brings new discipline to the team, and that the other boys feed off of his presence.
OC (Mark Sibley):
He’s very disciplined, he’s a very disciplined ball player. He’s very athletic, great defensive, got a lot of speed, he hits the ball well, and as we’ve found out he’s a pretty good pitcher too. So at this level, you know, for a seventeen year old kid, he’s, you know, as top a level as you’re going to find. We’re lucky to probably have four guys that are close to that, so he’s just, you know, another fella to throw in there. But he does a lot of things well, and he’s really smart about baseball. He may struggle communicating at times, but he knows the game and he knows how to play.
VO:
Hiroya’s teammates call him “Hiro”, a name he has earned with his quick defensive play and ability to see the team. Team Captain Corey Wood says the rest of the team appreciates having him around.
OC (Corey Wood):
This time it’s a lot better, cause we don’t have the greatest talent, like we did last year or the year before. So having him is big time, really good for us.
VO:
The language barrier may be great between Hiro and his new teammates, but he says he likes the relaxed practices and freedom of the Canadian style of play.
OC (Hiroya Tsunekawa):
Canada is very free, a free style. But in Japan, it’s so very … very, very hard.
OC Standup:
The Leo Hayes Lions are at the end of their season and about to play the most crucial games of the past few months. Hiro’s prediction looks good for the team, and he says he’ll miss playing for the Lions – a sentiment that is surely echoed by his teammates. For STU Journalism, I’m Jayne Erickson.
