Intro:
While most are hungry for turkey this weekend, six New Brunswick teams are hungry for fierce competition. The boys and girls under 14-18 nationals take place this week. Melissa Russwurm has the story.
VO:
When summer ends, so does soccer for most premier teams in New Brunswick. But for the best teams, the biggest competition is just kicking off.
VO:
The Fredericton District Soccer Association’s under 18 women’s team is one of six teams in New Brunswick warming up for soccer Nationals. Coach Howie Myatt expects the girls will see some tough competition, but says his team is ready.

“They’ve trained hard, like we have been together, the core group of this team has been together for seven years so we’ve trained summer, winter and kept working at the tasks.”
VO:
Andrea Smith is the Executive Director of FDSA. She says the west region has been so successful with the sport because of volunteer dedication and the regional technical director, Macky Singh.

“Having him on board has helped with the development of our coaches and also of our athletes. He ran a regional development program last year in the city so that was an opportunity for coaches and players to be involved through the winter months, whereas without those programs, we have athletes that don’t touch a soccer ball from the fall through to the spring.”
VO:
Smith has ideas on how to improve the level of play throughout the province.

“I think that if we’re going to continue to grow as a province and develop the sport provincially, we need to have those technical directors in each region so that we can grow together, rather then in various regions.”
VO:
In total, New Brunswick is sending 3 teams from Fredericton, 2 from the Chaleur Soccer Club in Bathurst and one from Codiac first touch in Moncton. They will be competing with teams from all over Canada.
Stand-up:
Soccer New Brunswick is the head organization for the sport in the province. Now, I spoke with Meghan Rossiter, Business and Program administrator at SNB and she told me the organization would like to expand the use of technical directors so they benefit more areas of the province.
As for the National competition, for the U14, 16 and 18 boys and girls, it takes place from October 7-12. For updates throughout the week, check the competitions page on the Canada soccer website at www.canadasoccer.com
