Michael Camp clip Transcript

“I am a supporter of the idea that anyone can run a newspaper and shouldn’t be prevented from running any number of newspapers in any market they choose and the Irvings have taken advantage of that, it’s a fundamental freedom of Canada, there’s nothing wrong with that. But the problem is diversity. I don’t think it’s enough to get all your information from one source. No matter how good the reporters are, no matter how much the newspaper may from time to time try to be an independent voice that serves its readers, the fact of its ownership will always be a factor. It’s just a truth, it’s a structural truth. We are not likely to read a lot of critical journalism in a newspaper concerning the refinery, or energy projects sponsored by the Irvings in Saint John. They will give us a fair balanced look at community resistance or community groups that are speaking out against something like that, but they will not be proactive in that respect.”
