Haiti earthquake
Powerful earthquake hits Haiti – Urgent help needed
On January 12, 2010 a 7.0 magnitude earthquake, followed by several powerful aftershocks, struck off the western coast of Haiti, causing buildings to collapse in Port au Prince and chaos as people fled the damage. It is estimated that 3 million people have been affected and 200,000 left homeless.
Red Cross response
The Red Cross response was immediate, today hundreds of local volunteers continue to work around the clock to assist thousands in need or humanitarian aid.
The Canadian Red Cross has mobilized to support the work of our sister National Society the Haitian Red Cross. In addition to financial assistance and emergency supplies the Red Cross has deployed 12 trained emergency response workers. Canadian Red Cross continues to send additional supports to Haiti as needed.
Our work in Canada
In Canada, local Red Cross volunteers in collaboration with the Government of Quebec are assisting earthquake survivors as they return home. This work includes reuniting families and ensuring people have a safe and warm place to sleep.

IN KIND DONATIONS Traveling to the area or in-kind donations of food, clothing and other items, while well intentioned, are not the best way to help those in need. There are tremendous processing and transportation costs involved in shipping these items to beneficiaries. Local purchases of food and clothing are more culturally appropriate and effective. Red Cross supplies can be purchased in the immediate area, thereby reducing transportation costs. Cash transfers to the affected region provide the optimum flexibility to our Red Cross colleagues so they can meet the most urgent needs.
